This book provides an excellent introduction to the Mindfulness Centered Therapies (MCT) method for therapists, clients and students. It is also an excellent "how-to" for therapists and students already using a mindfulness approach who want to expand and enhance their skills in the use of relational mindfulness. It provides concise, in depth descriptions of its three component methods: (1) Hakomi Body Centered Psychotherapy; (2) Internal Family Systems Therapy; (3) Focusing.

This well written book also illustrates important processes in each method with examples derived from actual counseling sessions. These excerpts clearly show how these methods can be used together. They include annotated transcripts of client/therapist dialogues and video clips. Therapists can use these resources to train themselves in how to apply these methods and how to combine them with other methods: cognitive, narrative and experiential.

Mindfulness Centered Therapies also includes a selected bibliography on Mindfulness and its use in psychotherapy with over 750 books and articles. This excellent resource was compiled by Gregory J. Johanson, Ph.D. and co-author of Grace Unfolding, and trainer in the Hakomi and Internal Family Systems methods.

A two hour companion DVD is provided online at this website to owners of the book. The DVD describes and illustrates key skills used in Hakomi, IFS, and Focusing. Each skill is illustrated with one to three video clips taken during actual therapy sessions. The DVD is supplemented with commentary in the book that adds additional instructions on the use of each skill along with comments by the therapist on each clip.

This training DVD is available on this website. A passcode in the book grants access through the second menu item (entitled "Access Online Video"). If you would like to own the DVD you may order it separately or bundled with the book through Paypal option or use the contact page to place your order for book, email, or both.

What Others Say

It is a pleasure to introduce this wonderful book and DVD to you.
— Ron Kurtz, Author of Body Centered Psychotherapy: The Hakomi Method & creator of Hakomi
Psychotherapy is rapidly catching up with spirituality in its appreciation of the state called mindfulness. This well written book offers practical guidelines and examples of how three different but complementary psychotherapies use it. It is an excellent contribution to this growing movement.
— Richard C. Schwartz, Ph.D., Author of Internal Family Systems Therapy, & creator of Internal Family Systems
This wonderful book represents a most fundamental understanding of mindfulness in spirit and in its applications for therapists. The authors make the clear distinction of "relational mindfulness" and explain how its use can be integrated deeply into psychodynamic processes.
— Haiko Weiss, Ph.D., Co-editor of The Handbook of Body Psychotherapy, founding trainer of the Hakomi Institute; International Director of the Hakomi Institute of Europe
It is a joy to read Mindfulness Centered Therapies. Cole and Ladas-Gaskin have written in a marvelously therapist-friendly, skill-based way bringing together the powerful mindful-experiential aspects of Hakomi Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Focusing.
— Greg Johanson, M.Div., Ph.D., FAAIM, FAPA, LPC, founding trainer of the Hakomi Institute, and trainer of Internal Family Systems. Author (with Ron Kurtz) of Grace Unfolding: Psychotherapy in the Spirit of the Tao-te ching
